Campus security officer Larry Howard passes away

Members of the Case Western Reserve University community are mourning the loss of Larry Howard, a campus security officer known for his kindness, professionalism and deep respect for others. He passed away Feb. 18 at the age of 72.

Howard, who began working at the university in 2023 after previously serving in security through a contract agency at CWRU, dedicated his time here to ensuring campus safety. His responsibilities included overseeing the security of buildings such as the dental clinic and Veale Convocation, Recreation, and Athletic Center, responding to medical emergencies, and fostering a welcoming environment for students, faculty and staff.

Though his colleagues remember Howard as a quiet soul, all admired his friendly attitude and the pride he took in his work.

“He was very big on respect,” said Vincent Johnstone, director of campus security in the Department of Public Safety. “He was kind of like a grandfather in a sense.”

Howard’s strong attention to detail and his commitment to doing his job well will be missed.

Outside of work, Howard enjoyed spending time outdoors and visiting local parks.
