Graduate students seeking funding to support their master’s theses or doctoral dissertation research are invited to apply for social justice fellowships.
Applicants will have the opportunity to carry out research or projects related to social justice, in any discipline.
Up to two awards of $3,500 will be made, to be used for expenses associated with the conduct of the project or research. Fellowship funds may not be used to fund costs already incurred prior to the date of the award or for research that has already been completed. Examples of allowable expenses include:
- The costs of housing at the site of the research
- Airfare to the site of the research
- Stipends to be paid to research participants/interviewees
- Printing costs for study-related materials
A complete application should include the following:
- A proposal of no more than three single-spaced pages in length. The proposal should include:
- A description of the proposed project or research.
- An explanation of the relationship between the proposed project or research and social justice
- The aim of the research or project
- A listing of all other persons or entities with whom the student will be collaborating, e.g., if the project involves an agency
- A timeline for completion of the proposed research/project
- An explanation of no more than 250 words in length of how the fellowship will advance the student’s career goals as they relate to social justice
- The names of one or more faculty at Case Western Reserve University who might serve as an active adviser to the project/research. (They can be contacted at a later date if the applicant is awarded the fellowship. The adviser must be willing to guide the student’s research, as well as write a separate mid-year and final report regarding the student’s progress.)
- A resume or CV
- An unofficial CWRU transcript
Individuals awarded a fellowship will be required to:
- Complete the proposed research study or project
- Provide a written report to the Social Justice Institute at the midpoint and at the conclusion of the fellowship
- Ensure that the faculty adviser provides a separate mid-year and final report focused on the student’s research progress
- Deliver a presentation to members of the Social Justice Institute and invitees at the conclusion of the fellowship
The applicant agrees to acknowledge the Social Justice Institute of Case Western Reserve University on all relevant presentations and publications.

Applications will be reviewed and selected by a subcommittee of the Social Justice Institute. Awards will be announced by the first week of May.
