“Behind the Scenes with the Search Committee: The Academic Application Process”

The School of Graduate Studies Professional Development Center will hold the first session of its “Academic Job Search Series for Graduate Students and Postdocs in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences” Friday, Dec. 1, from 12:45 to 2 p.m. in Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Community Studies Center, Room 115.

The session is titled “Behind the Scenes with the Search Committee: The Academic Application Process.”

In this session, a panel of faculty members will discuss how the curriculum vitae (CV) and cover letter are key documents when applying to academic jobs. Additional topics covered will be:

  • The job search timeline;
  • Search committee make-up;
  • Networking;
  • Commonly requested materials;
  • Teaching and research statements; and
  • Publications.

Faculty members will share their experiences and tips on how to craft compelling CVs and cover letters that emphasize specific skills and experiences to fit within and enrich academic institutions and best prepare for the application process.
