Astronomy Professor Heather Morrison discusses formation of the Milky Way

Galaxy formation: The new Milky Way

Nature: Astronomers argue about the sequence of events during the Milky Way’s birth, but all agree it involves dark matter. At some point, dark-matter subhalos would have pulled in enough gas to form stars and become dwarf galaxies, which eventually would be “whizzing all over the place,” said astronomy professor Heather Morrison. “Things were just a mess.”
