Associate Vice President Emerita for Academic Affairs Jean Calhoun passes away

Associate Vice President Emerita for Academic Affairs Jean S. Calhoun passed away Jan. 25 at her home in Shaker Heights after a brief illness. She was 84.

Born March 20, 1927, Calhoun earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Bryn Mawr College in 1948 and her master’s in English at Western Reserve University in 1959. She began teaching at Western Reserve University in 1959, and she served as a teaching fellow, lecturer and instructor in the Department of English until 1966. In her nearly 30 years with the university before retirement, she held titles such as vice provost for humanities and arts (1971-74), acting dean of student affairs (1981-82; 1986-87), assistant vice president of the university (1974-82) and associate vice president for academic affairs (1982-87), among others. She then became associate vice president emerita for academic affairs in 1988.

In her retirement, Calhoun enjoyed traveling, gardening, playing doubles tennis, listening to the Cleveland Orchestra and spending time with friends and family.

The family plans to hold private and public events to honor her memory in May.
