“Ask-Advise-Connect and eReferral to Improve Tobacco Cessation Assistance by Linking Primary Care with the Quitline”

The Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods (PRCHN) Monthly Seminar Series will resume after its summer hiatus Wednesday, Sept. 13, with a talk from noon to 1:15 p.m. in the BioEnterprise Building ground-floor conference room.

Susan FlockeSue Flocke, assistant director of PRCHN, and the eReferral Team will present “Ask-Advise-Connect and eReferral to Improve Tobacco Cessation Assistance by Linking Primary Care with the Quitline.”

While rates of smoking have generally declined in the U.S., rates have not declined for the lowest economic classes. Guidelines urge primary care practices to routinely provide tobacco cessation care (e.g., assess tobacco use, provide brief cessation advice and refer to cessation support).

The purpose of the eReferral study is to assess the uptake and impact of a systems-based strategy to address provision of tobacco cessation care among primary care clinics serving predominately economically disadvantaged patients. The presentation will describe the engagement of key stakeholders, the process using the electronic health record that was implemented, and the main findings from the study on uptake and the reach of services to patients.

Flocke’s research interests include preventive service delivery in the primary care setting, doctor-patient communication of health behavior change and linkages to community resources to facilitate behavior change.

The CWRU PRCHN is one of eight prevention research centers engaged in the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network (CPCRN). Flocke serves as the principal investigator for CWRU. The CPCRN is a national network of academic, public health and community partners who work together to reduce the burden of cancer, especially among those disproportionately affected.

Flocke is leading local projects focused on establishing and implementing linkages between MetroHealth System primary care centers and the Ohio Quitline, and she is leading the cross-center initiative workgroup on Tobacco and Lung Cancer Screening to inform the burden of tobacco use among Federally Qualified Health Centers and low income populations.

The PRCHN Seminar Series is open to the public and takes place from noon to 1:15 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month at the BioEnterprise Building. Parking is available and a light lunch is served.
