Apply to join the Social Justice Scholars reading group

The Social Justice Institute invites undergraduate first, second, and third year students at Case Western Reserve University to apply to the Social Justice Scholars reading group. Apply by Friday, May 23.

In fall 2025, selected participants will be responsible for completing assigned readings and participating in each of the five sessions. In consideration of full participation, each Social Justice Scholar will receive a $250 award. Social Justice Scholars agree to be responsible for reading all of the assigned materials, and must attend all five discussion sessions. Fall participants can apply to continue as a Social Justice Scholar during the spring semester (with an additional stipend). Work in the spring will build upon learning completed during the fall semester.

The five sessions will be held the following Fridays during Community Hour (12:30 to 2 p.m.):

  • Sept. 5
  • Sept. 19
  • Oct. 3
  • Oct. 31
  • Nov. 14

Scholar sessions will be led by Ayesha Bell Hardaway, director of the Social Justice Institute and professor of law. Award-winning author, teacher, artist, poet and activist Keith Lamar will join Hardaway. Lamar has spent the past 31 years fighting a wrongful conviction that has him on Ohio’s death row. Living in solitary confinement on death row, Lamar has co-taught classes at Youngstown State University, published his memoir Condemned, recorded albums, and more.
