Anant Madabhushi, professor of biomedical engineering and director of the Center for Computational Imaging and Personalized Diagnostics, was recently awarded U.S. patent: 9,262,583, titled “Image similarity-based finite element model registration.”
U.S. patent 9,262,583 relates to a method and apparatus associated with evaluating global deformations and local deformations in a prostate following cancer treatment.
One example of the application of this technology is in capturing changes within prostate following treatment for prostate cancer via pre-external beam radiation treatment (EBRT) where the prostate has been imaged via three-dimensional magnetic resonance image before and after radiotherapy.
The technology involves extracting image texture information from the pre-EBRT and post-EBRT images and employing it to construct a finite element model in order to co-register and hence capture the differences between the deformed pre-EBRT image and the post-EBRT image.
