A quantum opportunity for campus startups

Campus startups in medicine and life sciences now have the chance to compete for access to the world’s first quantum computer dedicated to healthcare research.

Cleveland Clinic announced this week that it is accepting applications to its newly launched Quantum Innovation Catalyzer Program. Up to four companies will have the opportunity not only to use an IBM Quantum System One on the Clinic’s main campus, but also to participate in a quantum working group that the hospital and IBM have established.

Unveiled at the Cleveland Clinic’s main campus in March, the Quantum System One is part of a 10-year effort between the hospital system and IBM to apply quantum computing to speed advances in biomedical research. Case Western Reserve, Cleveland State and Kent State universities also are academic partners in the endeavor.

The deadline for applications is Jan. 15, 2024, with teams selected by March 15. In April those teams will begin a 24-week experience that includes space on the Cleveland Clinic’s main campus, technical seminars and quantum education sessions and, finally, a “demo day” for the companies to highlight their efforts to potential investors, as well as clinical and corporate partners.
