Kaustav Bera, a research associate in the Center for Computational Imaging and Personalized Diagnostics, received the Early Career Travel Award from the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC).
Travel Awards are available for early career professionals and trainees to cover attendance at the annual IASLC 2019 World Conference on Lung Cancer. The conference will be held in Barcelona, Spain, in September.
Bera’s presentation at the World Conference on Lung Cancer is to develop a novel risk score that combines radiomics from CT scans, the quantitative mining of interpretable information from radiographic images, with relevant clinico-pathologic information, which includes the pathologic stage and lymphovascular invasion status, to predict how long patients of early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (the most common type of lung cancer) survive without any disease recurrence following surgery.
This research also incorporates significant radiomic information derived from outside the tumor in addition to intratumoral radiomics. The preliminary results showed that patients with a high risk score determined by the model had almost a four times worse risk of having the disease come back as compared to those with a low risk score.
The senior author on this abstract is Anant Madabhushi, the F. Alex Nason Professor II of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University.
About the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer
The IASLC is the only global network dedicated to the study and eradication of lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies. Since its founding in 1974, the association’s membership has grown from around 100 physicians and researchers to nearly 6,500 lung and thoracic cancer specialists from all disciplines living in more than 100 countries.
