The fifth annual Ubbelohde lecture, titled “What is the Purpose of the American Economy: A History Lesson,” will be held Sept. 20. The free, public lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. at Ford Auditorium, inside the Allen Memorial Library Building.
Richard White, the Margaret Byrne Professor of American History at Stanford University, A Pulitzer Prize-nominated historian specializing in the history of the American West, environmental history and Native American history, White is faculty co-director of the Bill Lane Center for the American West and the former president of the Organization of American Historians. He received a MacArthur fellowship in 1995 and was awarded a Mellon Distinguished Professor grant in 2007.
During the lecture, White will discuss the purpose of the economy—and how that’s changed from a meaningful question to a nonsensical one. He will focus largely on the late 19th century, during which many Americans evaluated their economic options, White said.
