The 73rd annual CWRU Book Sale, sponsored by the Association for Continuing Education (ACE), will be held Saturday, June 1, through Tuesday, June 4, in Adelbert Gym.
Sandra Melzer and Wanda Ullman, the book sale’s co-chairs, said the sale started 73 years ago with book donations, but over time, people with interests in music (vinyl, CDs and sheet music), movies, games, puzzles and ephemera expanded the types of donated items for sale.
This year, more than 80,000 items were donated. The donations included that from The Figgie Family Trust, which donated 1,600 books (for children and adults) from the family’s library, said book sale’s co-chairs.
The public event will take place from noon to 5 p.m. June 1-3, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 4.
Admission is free except from 10 a.m. to noon on June 1, when early-bird visitors pay a $20 admission. Funds raised will support the ACE adult education programs.
On Sunday, June 2, those with a designated postcard or online coupon can save $5. All items will have reduced prices Monday, June 3. During the final sale day (June 4), the sale will have “box day,” meaning all contents of a box carried by a patron will cost $5.
Cash and credit cards are accepted for sale purchases.
Tables will be organized around themes, such as art, literature (popular and classic), history, religion, geography, science and many more. Rare and special books also will have a special table.
Guests also will have the chance to meet Margaret Bernstein, the Cleveland author of the Donuts with Dad children’s series and WKYC-TV’s director of advocacy and community initiatives, Sunday, June 2, from 1 to 5 p.m. Bernstein will have copies of her books for sale and signing.
