With the end of the academic year nearing, students all across campus will engage in a variety of traditions to mark the occasion. As a follow-up to our December Did You Know section highlighting winter traditions, we will share some spring traditions of past and present.
In 1910, a Western Reserve University student had the idea to host a relay race in commemoration of the university’s 1882 move from Hudson to University Circle. Each undergraduate class was to form a team to run the 26 miles from the old Hudson campus to Adelbert Hall; the winning class would get to carve their year into a large stone.
Though the route and competitors have changed, the tradition has persisted for over a century. An incentive has been added to the race in recent years: If a class wins all four years they attend CWRU, they earn dinner with the provost.
This year’s race will be held Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be giveaways, music, food and speeches from university leadership.
