Join the Social Justice Institute for a light bagel breakfast and conversation with Sana Mahmud, former captain of the National Women’s Soccer Team of Pakistan and program officer for the international organization Right to Play. The discussion will take place Thursday, March 28, from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. in Crawford Hall A13.
Born and raised in Islamabad, Mahmud faced obstacles as a girl dedicated to playing basketball and soccer.
A strong advocate for higher education, she got her undergraduate degree from Bahria University, Islamabad, and went on to receive the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship, through which she got a master’s degree in international development from Ohio University. She specialized in sports, gender and development and earned a certificate in women’s studies. She then went on to implement her sports and development project for underprivileged children in Ecuador, South America, as a part of her program.
Mahmud will discuss her childhood experiences, her professional career and her role with Right to Play, which recognizes limitations children around the world may face, including violence, child labor, early marriage, illiteracy and inequality. Many must fight to attend and stay in school, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to be safe. Right to Play aims to empower children to rise above these challenges and find their way back to hope.
