“War crimes” charges in Syria now possible
Reuters: The International Committee of the Red Cross has officially named the fighting in Syria an “armed conflict,” which makes combatants subject to the Geneva Convention’s laws of war. “Once the laws of war apply, all the countries that are party to the Geneva Convention—which is basically every country in the world, including Syria—have obligation to allow the Red Cross to come in and observe the conditions of people that are in detention,” explained Michael Scharf, associate dean for Global Legal Studies.
