The French Section of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures announces the opening of its new International French for Specific Purposes Exam Center. DMLL has named Fabienne Pizot-Haymore, Full-time Lecturer of French, as the Managing Director of the Center. The Center will offer the possibility for students and other interested parties to sit for exams leading to diplomas in Business French, Medical French, and French for Diplomacy. These diplomas are awarded through the French Chamber of Commerce in Paris and are recognized internationally.
The Department rotates course offerings that train for these exams for both majors and non-majors in French. The newest edition of these courses, FRCH 309: French for Diplomacy and International Relations, will be offered for the first time in Spring 2019, taught by Charlotte Sanpere.
DMLL Chair Cheryl Toman congratulates her colleagues on the Center’s establishment: “This is an excellent addition to the degrees in French we already offer at CWRU. With just one course, students have the possibility to have an important international certification that will allow them access to companies and organizations of the French-speaking world and provide them with a documented skill useful for working with an entity that conducts business or research with France. The Paris Chamber of Commerce has a network of 800,000 businesses, corporations, organizations, etc. and we are proud to be part of that network with the inauguration of this Center. It is yet another way we are answering the needs of our students who are thinking ahead to their careers.”
The inauguration of the Center held on October 3 was attended by faculty, students, and staff alike as well as prominent members of the regional and international community.
In attendance were Marianne Condé-Salazar, Director of International Relations and Education at the Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie Paris Ile de France, David Fleshler, Vice-Provost for CWRU’s Center for International Affairs, Stephen J. Knerly, the Honorary Consul of France for the Cleveland area, and Cedric LeRouge, Executive Director of the Ohio Chapter of the French American Chamber of Commerce.
