Undergraduate students: Apply to be in Social Justice Scholars study group

The Social Justice Institute invites first-years, sophomores and juniors to apply for the Social Justice Scholars study group. Accepted applicants will receive a $500 stipend for their full participation.

Over the course of spring semester 2019, accepted applicants will gather with Social Justice Institute Co-Director John Flores to discuss four books and several short primers. Students will be responsible for reading all assigned materials and attending the four sessions with an open mind.

The group will discuss classics, such as The Wretched of the Earth, and recently published books that address contemporary social justice issues.

After the final session, students will reconvene to discuss what they learned over the course of the four sessions. Statements will be compiled into a video and podcast format to be shared with the wider Social Justice Institute community via YouTube.

The sessions will be held during Community Hour from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on four Fridays: Jan. 18, Feb. 15, March 29 and April 19.

The initiative seeks to contribute to the creation of a broader undergraduate social justice community at CWRU.

Those selected to join Social Justice Scholars must participate fully. In order to receive the $500 stipend, students must attend all four sessions in their entirety.

Students interested in applying should submit a brief one-page statement that explains why they are interested in joining Social Justice Scholars. The one-page statement must be submitted as a double-spaced Microsoft Word document in 12-point, Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins on all four sides.

The statement should include the applicant’s name, year of study, areas of study (majors and minors) and email address.

All application statements should be emailed to socialjustice@case.edu by Friday, Nov. 2.
