The Social Justice Institute and Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee will host “MLK50/Glenville50: Commemorating the Glenville Uprising and Its Legacy 50 Years Later through the Lens of Four Generations,” a conference and critical conversation.
The conference will be held Saturday, July 14, from noon to 4:30 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Branch of the Cleveland Public Library (1962 Stokes Blvd.) and Sunday, July 15, from 2 to 5 p.m. in Harkness Chapel.
About the conference
The conference will be moderated by Raymond Winbush, director of the Institute for Urban Research at Morgan State University and former Clevelander, and will feature guest speaker Allyson Carpenter, a Truman Scholar and graduate of Howard University. Panels of local residents and activists will include alumni Joan Southgate, Don Freeman, Vincent Holland, Latina Brooks, Kim Foreman, Alexis Crosby and Donte Gibbs.
The panelists will discuss:
- What Glenville was like leading up to 1968;
- The historical and social context that led to the violence of 1968;
- The response of the community and the immediate aftermath;
- The current state of Glenville; and
- Potential solutions for rebuilding a vibrant city.
The conference will focus on the five pillars introduced by Carl Stokes as a framework for the conversation: health, housing, education, economics and safety.
Both days are free and open to the community. Light refreshments will be served.
