Last year, the Tesla Orchestra launched the Open Spark Project, in which musicians around the world—and those here at Case Western Reserve University—submitted their music to be turned into lightning. The Tesla Orchestra launched the second year of the project May 25, and musicians can submit their compositions on OpenSparkProject.com through June 30.
On July 7, submissions will be played on twin giant musical tesla coils, turning the music into giant sparks of electricity several meters long.
The Tesla Orchestra is a musical group that uses tesla coils to convert music into lightning—the only university-based traveling group of its kind. About a dozen students, plus a handful of alumni, faculty and staff members, are involved in making Open Spark Project work. Most students are electrical and mechanical engineers, but the interdisciplinary project includes students at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland Institute of Music and Lorain County Community College.
