The Social Justice Institute will co-sponsor the world premiere of Exact Change, a film created entirely in Northeast Ohio that explores the true story of one individual’s challenging and ultimately triumphant transgender journey.
The film is written and performed by Christine Howey, a lifelong Clevelander who was born and lived as Richard until his transition at age 45 in 1990. More than a documentary or a memoir, Exact Change is a unique approach to transgender storytelling.
Howey plays herself at different ages, as well as many other people, including her mother, father, ex-wife, Dinah, and daughter, Noelle—along with characters who existed only in the mind of Richard/Christine. The film intersperses personal photos and family movies, animating the hopes, fears and desires of a transgender person navigating through an often hostile and unaccepting world.
The premiere will be Wednesday, June 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Capitol Theatre (1390 W. 65th St., Cleveland).
