This week’s UCITE seminar will center on “Helping Students Become Expert Learners.” The discussion will be held April 12 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Herrick Room on the ground floor of the Allen Memorial Library Building.
“Adaptive expertise” is emerging as a key concept in thinking about the process of education and professional development, and while it has become a hot topic in medical education, it has a much broader application. It compares “routine” expertise (a destination) to “adaptive” expertise (a process) and how we might identify and develop adaptive expertise, particularly in learners.
Dan Wolpaw, professor of medicine and director of Undergraduate Clinical Education in the School of Medicine, will lead a discussion to define the concept of adaptive expertise and explore approaches to identifying, teaching and assessing associated behaviors in educational settings.
The session will start out with participants exploring their own preconceptions of expertise, then comparing with each other’s ideas, and finally looking at approaches that support promote and teach adaptive expertise.
