Mentoring relationships between graduate students and faculty are meant to foster the creation of new knowledge at a research university.
The University Center for Innovation in Teaching and Education will offer its eighth Mentor Fellows program to advance the goal of promoting and recognizing good mentoring practices.
Faculty are invited to apply for the program, which is designed to encourage them to reflect and improve on their own mentoring practices and engage in thoughtful discussions with other faculty from across the university on how to improve the quality of mentoring.
To date, nearly 80 faculty members have participated in the program.
The program is a semester-long, seminar-type course in which faculty read and discuss research literature on mentoring, and learn how to apply those lessons in their own mentoring relationships. Readings and assignments take about four to six hours per week.
Meetings will be held each week on Wednesdays, Jan. 18-April 26, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in Allen Memorial Library Building’s Herrick Room. There will be no session on March 15 due to spring break. Lunch will be provided at each session.
Enrollment in the program implies a commitment by the faculty member to attend and participate in all 14 weekly sessions, submit weekly journals, participate in program evaluations and complete other assignments as may be required.
Those who complete the program receive a $2,500 grant for academic purposes to be used during the fiscal year July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2018.
The deadline for applications is Thursday, Dec. 8.
Applications should consist of a one-page bio-sketch containing contact information and education and employment history, and a one-page cover letter detailing:
- Number of master’s/doctoral students mentored by the applicant as principal dissertation supervisor;
- Other people mentored and in what capacity;
- Experience with mentoring;
- What mentoring issues are of concern to the applicant; and
- Reasons for wanting to participate in the program.
