The newly created Diversity 360 Speakers will open Friday, Sept. 16, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Tinkham Veale University Center ballroom.
The first event in the series will feature Derald Wing Sue, national diversity expert and professor of counseling psychology at Columbia University. He will deliver a lecture and sign books at the event, which is free and open to the public.
Sue is the author of a number of books, including Microaggressions in Everyday Life, Race Talk and the Conspiracy of Silence and Counseling the Culturally Diverse: Theory and Practice.
He served on President Bill Clinton’s Advisory Board on Race and is co-founder and first president of the Asian American Psychological Association. In addition, Sue has served as president of the Society of Counseling Psychology and the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues. He has conducted extensive research and published numerous articles related to microaggressions, multicultural psychology, multicultural education, multicultural counseling and therapy and the psychology of racism/antiracism.
The new speakers series is part of the Case Western Reserve University campuswide diversity education training program, Diversity 360. Implemented last fall, the training program provides general information about the importance of diversity and inclusion and discusses such topics as privilege, implicit bias and microaggression.
Since last fall nearly 4,000 faculty, staff, students and university leaders have completed Diversity 360 sessions. The Diversity 360 program has been expanded to include a lecture series, lunch and learn discussion sessions—which will highlight timely topics related to diversity and inclusion—and Diversity 360 facilitator training.
The Office for Inclusion, Diversity and Equal Opportunity (OIDEO) and Office of Student Affairs, Office of Multicultural Affairs and First Year Experience and Family Programs sponsor the program.
