In classroom discussions, faculty often pose questions to students in order to assess and develop their students’ understanding of the course content. However, many faculty members find that the complexity of the material makes the questions difficult for the students to fully grasp, even when they attempt to formulate an answer. This can lead to a superficial analysis and understanding of the concepts the lecturer is trying to convey.
At the next University Center for Innovation in Teaching and Education event, Helen Salz, professor of genetics and genome science, will describe the methods she uses in her courses to craft and redirect classroom discussion questions to advance a more sophisticated understanding of the material in her students.
This session will be held Thursday, July 14, from noon to 1 p.m. in in the Allen Memorial Medical Library’s Herrick Room (use Adelbert Road doors).
Pizza and sodas will be provided at this session.
