Don’t miss the deadline to apply for the Center for Civic Engagement & Learning’s inaugural criminal justice Alternative Spring Break.
The Center for Civic Engagement and Learning (CCEL) will give students the opportunity to learn about the complexities of the U.S. justice system and explore different views of justice with an Alternative Spring Break program.
Through CCEL’s “Beyond Orange is the New Black: Mass Incarceration in the U.S.” program, students will volunteer in Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor, Mich., with American Friends Service Committee, which advocates on behalf of incarcerated individuals and their loved ones on concerns related to conditions of confinement, health care access, parole preparation and more.
Students will tour a local jail and hear from formerly incarcerated individuals about their experiences.
The program will run March 6-12 and costs $385, which includes transportation, lodging, entertainment and most meals.
Participants will stay at Hostel Detroit, which will give them the opportunity to explore the rich cultural attractions Detroit has to offer.
Applications are available online and will be accepted on a rolling basis until Tuesday, Jan. 19, or until the trip is filled.
