The Flora Stone Mather Center for Women will hold a lunch and learn discussion on “Rape as a Plot Device” Monday, Nov. 30, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Tinkham Veale University Center, Suite 248.
The lunch and learn series focuses on discussions of hot-button topics typically occurring in popular culture. The next session will address how many TV shows use rape to advance plotlines. Recent examples include episodes of Orange is the New Black, Game of Thrones, Scandal, Private Practice, Vikings, House of Cards, Peaky Blinders, Downton Abbey and The Americans.
Why is rape being used in this manner? What should producers consider when choosing to do this? How triggering is this for survivors? Should it be used at all—and, if so, how can we advocate to do it better?
Registration is available online.
