This week, the Case Western Reserve University community will join millions of people across the country and around the world in commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The remembrance begins Friday, Sept. 9, at 12:30 p.m. with an all-campus commemoration event at Kelvin Smith Library Oval. The event will feature a color guard from the City of Cleveland Fire Department, musical performances by the Case Concert Choir and brief remarks from student leaders and Vice President for Student Affairs Glenn Nichols.
Student and local organizations will be at the commemoration event with information on how to get involved in weekend service events as well as activities such as card-making for U.S. troops. Bon Appétit will provide food and drinks. Additionally, three Peace by Piece quilts created by students, faculty and staff after 9/11 will be on display (they currently can be seen in Thwing Center).
Then, on Sunday, Sept. 11, the Interfraternity Congress and Panhellenic Council will host a candlelight vigil beginning at 9:30 p.m., also at the library oval. There, students and guests can share their memories, read poetry or simply join with friends in remembrance of the victims.
The rain site for both events will be Thwing Center.
Throughout the weekend, there will be a large number of 9/11 commemoration events happening across Cleveland, including Sunday events such as a procession down Ontario Street at 2:30 p.m., a free Cleveland Orchestra concert at 5 p.m. in Public Square, a viewing of United 93 at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque at 6:30 p.m. Find a calendar of events here.
The Community Hour commemoration event is sponsored by the Share the Vision Committee, Graduate Student Senate, Undergraduate Student Government, Staff Advisory Council, Bon Appétit, MediaVision and Facilities Services.
