NPR: Today marks the 10th anniversary of the power outage of 2003 that affected about 50 million people in the U.S. and Canada. Frank Merat, associate professor of electrical engineering, explained how an electrical transmission tower works—and how it can fail. “You can see the sag right there,” he said. “The more power going through, basically, the wire softens and it’ll come down.”
