Organizations raising funds for Dignity! Period. and domestic violence center in Cleveland

To complement the work of the Inamori Ethics Prize honoree Beatrice Mtetwa, a human rights lawyer in Zimbabwe, the Inamori International Center for Ethics and Excellence, Global Ethical Leaders Society and Flora Stone Mather Center for Women are bringing the Dignity! Period. campaign to Case Western Reserve University.

Dignity! Period. raises funds to purchase feminine products for women in Zimbabwe. The Dignity! Period. program is critical because a package of women’s sanitary products in Zimbabwe can cost more than twice the average monthly income of Zimbabwean women. Therefore, women are forced to resort to unsanitary methods that can cause infections and put them at an increased risk of STIs. This prevents women from going to work and prevents girls from attending school when they have their period, which increases to the oppression of women and girls in Zimbabwe. Just $24 can cover the cost of feminine products for a woman in Zimbabwe for one year.

In an effort to affect the community locally, as well as globally, we would like to collect feminine hygiene products to benefit women and girls at the Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center in Cleveland.

A campuswide collaboration is being initiated to bring awareness to the issue through partnered events and the sale of bracelets for donations of $5 or more. The goal is to raise $5,000 to donate to the Dignity!Period. project to benefit Zimbabwean women, and a goal of collecting 300 boxes of feminine products to donate to the local Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center.

Ways you can help:

  • Make a donation in Nord Atrium. We will have a table now through Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and every Tuesday after that throughout the semester from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. CaseCash, cash and checks will be accepted.
  • Donate a box of feminine products at one of the drop-off locations. Drop-off boxes can be found in the Inamori Center for International Ethics and Excellence on the ground level of Crawford Hall and in Thwing Center atrium.
  • Sign up to volunteer to manage the table in Nord Hall on a Tuesday. Email nmd17@case.edu to set a date.
