As the executive director of Environmental Health & Safety, Chuck Hart and his department help keep campus safe—preventing potential problems, training individuals to use equipment safely and maintaining regulatory compliance.
Hart moved back to his native Cleveland in December after spending more than 25 years in Athens, serving as Ohio University’s director of environmental health and safety and most recently teaching in the Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety Program. So what’s he enjoying now that he’s back in Cleveland, and what does he like best about life here at CWRU?
Find out now.
1. What’s on your iPod?
Well, I don’t have an iPod. I am not much of a gadget person, other than my satellite radio—that’s a must. But I am a ’60-’70s rock ’n’ roll enthusiast and have a collection of vinyl, DVDs, books and such. But I love many different types of music, both recorded and live.
2. What’s your favorite spot in Cleveland and why?
Probably the next great spot I discover is my temporary favorite. Being new to Cleveland, there is so much to see and do, from what I am learning. Even though I was raised here, I have been away for a long time.
For now, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the Metroparks are favorites. I love all things outdoors that I can enjoy with my family: hiking, boating, fishing, taking pictures and the like. It’s the beauty and peacefulness about it that I love.
3. If you could only take three books with you to a deserted island, what would you take?
Definitely the Bible. Then it’s a tough one—perhaps a Tim Russert book and something by E.O. Wilson; I have a signed copy of The Creation on my bookshelf.
4. What one word would you use to describe yourself, and what one word would your friends use to describe you?
I would hope that it is the same word … genuine.
5. What’s your favorite thing about Case Western Reserve University?
No question, it is the amazing depth and breadth of our research endeavors. I am just amazed as I go around campus and meet our faculty and staff and see the unbelievable work they are doing on a daily basis—in the lab, community and classroom. It is highly motivating!
