Case Western Reserve University School of Law invites all members of the campus community to an in-person expert roundtable discussion, titled “Prosecuting War Criminals: From Nuremberg to the Ukraine.” The event is co-sponsored by the school’s Frederick K. Cox International Law Center and will be held Wednesday, May 18, from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage (2929 Richmond Road, Beachwood).
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been accompanied by some of the worst war crimes and crimes against humanity committed since WWII. The International Criminal Court has launched an investigation. In this program, a panel of international war crimes experts will discuss how the lessons of Nuremberg and other war crimes trials will guide the effort to establish accountability for the international crimes committed in the Ukraine.
Panelists include:
- Professor Jim Johnson, the chief prosecutor of the Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone and director of the War Crimes Research Office at Case Western Reserve University School of Law;
- Cleveland Marshall College of Law Professor Milena Sterio, who is executive director of the Public International Law & Policy Group, a Nobel Peace Prize-nominated NGO that provides legal counsel in peace negotiations and war crimes prosecutions;
- Associate Dean Avidan Cover, director of the Institute for Global Security Law and Policy at Case Western Reserve University School of Law; and
- Michael Scharf, co-dean of Case Western Reserve University School of Law and host of ideastream’s “Talking Foreign Policy” radio show.
The panel will be moderated by Cathy Mansfield, senior instructor of law at CWRU and creator of The Sparks Fly Upward, an opera about the Holocaust to be held June 9-12 at the Maltz Performing Arts Center.
Advance registration is required.
