Dental medicine’s Rui Amaral Mendes contributes to clinical practice guidelines for managing mucositis as a result of cancer therapy

Rui Amaral Mendes, adjunct professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences in the School of Dental Medicine, penned an article titled Translation of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Mucositis Secondary to Cancer Therapy, published on MASCC.org

His findings discuss oral and GI tract mucositis, which is a common complication of cancer treatment (after radiotherapy, chemo, combination of RT and CT, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation). In 2020, an updated version of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Mucositis Secondary to Cancer Therapy was published following up a systematic review conducted by the Mucositis Study Group of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer and International Society for Oral Oncology (MASCC/ISOO).

A summary of the guidelines have now been made available in eight languages to be used by colleagues worldwide.

Non-members of MASCC can also have access to the guidelines; all one needs is an email address.
