Freedman Center for Digital Scholarship offers three fellowship opportunities

Now through June 20, the Freedman Fellows Program is accepting applications from full-time faculty and students for the 2021–22 academic year. In addition to financial support, fellows also receive project guidance and technical assistance from experts at Kelvin Smith Library’s Freedman Center for Digital Scholarship.

The program is offering three distinct opportunities:

  • Freedman Faculty Fellowships are open to full-time faculty from all schools and departments and fund well-defined research projects that involve the application of digital tools and methods to scholarly or pedagogical problems. For examples of some past projects, see the list of 2020-2021 faculty recipients. Applicants may request funding up to $15,000. Awarded amounts may vary depending on the scope of the project and number of applicants.
  • Freedman Student Fellowships are open to full-time undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences, Weatherhead School of Management and Case School of Engineering. Student fellowships provide funding and support to employ digital scholarship methods in pursuit of significant and impactful digital research, which may include research undertaken as part of undergraduate capstones, and graduate theses or dissertations. For examples of some past projects, please see the list of 2020-21 student recipients. Applicants may request funding amounts up to $2,500. Awarded amounts may vary depending on the scope of the project and number of applicants.
  • The Freedman Collections Researcher Fellowship is open to one full-time undergraduate or graduate student in the College of Arts and Sciences, Weatherhead School of Management or Case School of Engineering. This unique opportunity provides a student with hourly compensation ($15/hour for up to six hours per week) to work on digital research that actively involves Kelvin Smith Library’s diverse collections. The student recipient will work under the direction of a chosen faculty mentor. To be considered for the collections researcher opportunity, a student and a faculty member must co-apply. This opportunity is particularly well-suited for undergraduate and early graduate students who would like to gain hands-on research experience in digital scholarship.

Applications for all fellowship opportunities are due by June 20. Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to schedule a consultation with members of the Freedman Center for Digital Scholarship team before submitting an application. To schedule a consultation, contact freedmancenter@case.edu.

The Freedman Fellows Program is generously funded by the Freedman Fellows Endowment, established by Samuel B. and Marian K. Freedman, and supported by the Kelvin Smith Library, the Lillian and Milford Harris Library, the Cleveland Health Sciences Library and the Judge Ben C. Green Law Library.
