Critically acclaimed indigenous poet Joy Harjo will discuss her work in a conversation with David Lucas, poet laureate of the State of Ohio and lecturer in the Department of English, Monday, March 29, from 6 to 7 p.m. Harjo, a member of the Mvskoke/Creek Nation, is the author of several books of poetry, as well as collections of interviews and conversations, children’s books, and collaborative art texts. She is the 23rd U.S. poet laureate and the first Native American poet to serve in that position. 

Among her many honors, Harjo has received the PEN USA Literary Award for Creative Non-Fiction, the American Book Award and the Jackson Poetry Prize. A renowned musician, Harjo performs with her saxophone nationally and internationally, solo and with her band, the Arrow Dynamics. 

The Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities will host this event, which is the 2021 Rose Wohlgemuth Weisman Women’s Voices Lecture and is part of the 2021 Cleveland Humanities Festival: Identity.
