Mark S. Fleisher, research professor at the Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education, had a chapter published in the book Social Bridges and Contexts in Criminology and Sociology: Reflections on the Intellectual Legacy of James F. Short, Jr.
Fleisher’s chapter, titled “Social Observation, Participation, and Ethnography,” highlights anthropological methods, namely direct observation and direct engagement. These methods have shown their value in complementing sociological methodologies. Fleisher met professor James Short as an anthropology graduate student 50 years ago; Short came to influence Fleisher’s thinking and research through the value he placed on social observation and participation.
