Members of the campus community are mourning the loss of undergraduate student Garrett Marchetti, following his sudden death last week.

In an interview with KKTV during his senior year of high school, Marchetti explained his career goals simply: “Making a difference. That’s kind of where I see myself.” In his sophomore year at Case Western Reserve University, he was already doing just that—in the pursuit of his academic studies, in his extracurricular activities and in his relationships with others.

Though he hadn’t officially declared his major, Marchetti was considering the Integrated Graduate Studies program in bioethics. He also was involved in numerous activities as a member of Case Men’s Glee Club, CWRU Symphonic Winds, Case for Life, Newman Catholic Student Association and the Undergraduate Bioethics Society. Deeply connected to his faith, Marchetti had an interest in Catholic theology.

“If there is one essential truth that Garrett imparted on me and to those blessed by his presence, it is to be loving—a loving son, a loving brother, and most importantly, a loving friend to all,” said Alex Cabulong, a sophomore, friend and fellow member of Newman Catholic Campus Ministry.

Known for his selfless nature, Marchetti was devoted to helping others, whether it be his friends or any individuals in need. Friend and nursing student Nataliana Espinosa said he was humble, kind and always thinking of others.

Steve Perry, CWRU’s campus minister with Newman Catholic Campus Ministry, said Marchetti was not one to take the spotlight, but instead redirect it to others.

He was what a good student should be, explained philosophy lecturer Bharat Ranganathan, his advisor. Marchetti’s desire to learn, Ranganathan said, translated into excellence in the classroom, where he would articulate his views, but also listen attentively and openly to those shared by his peers.

Prior to coming to Case Western Reserve, Marchetti was part of the back-to-back state championship Palmer Ridge High School football team in Monument, Colorado. His passion for exercise continued into college, and he often encouraged others to take care of themselves physically, spiritually and emotionally.

Showing pride for his Italian culture, Marchetti could often be spotted dining in Little Italy, and Espinosa noted he even created a spreadsheet to score the restaurants.

“Thank you for sharing your life with us,” Cabulong said when asked to share remembrances of Marchetti. “I will always hold the memories that we shared together close to my heart.”
