Common Reading program includes speaker, essay contest and philanthropy work for homeless

As previously announced, the Common Reading selection for 2011 is Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do? by nationally renowned scholar and author Michael Sandel, the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Government at Harvard. Sandel will be the keynote speaker at the University Fall Convocation on Aug. 31 in Severance Hall. For more information about Sandel and the book, visit www.justiceharvard.org.

All new undergraduates will receive a complimentary copy of the book during their Summer Sessions. The Common Reading Program at Case Western Reserve University also includes an essay contest about the assigned reading. The contest is only open to first-year students.

Furthermore, in line with Sandel’s discussion about justice, the Orientation Executive Board selected the theme of economic justice, specifically homelessness, for this year’s common reading philanthropy. To connect to Cleveland and to address the issues in our community, the Common Reading philanthropy is supporting the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless (NEOCH). To learn more, click here.
