An innovator in novel ways to deliver medical curriculum with a passion for making the health care system safer for patients will become vice dean for medical education at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Lia Logio, known for her energetic and innovative approach to residency training, served most recently as the June F. Klinghoffer Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine. She has spent the last 25 years advocating for patient safety, developing cutting-edge methods and programs in medical education, and supporting faculty development.
“Dr. Logio rose to the top of a list of distinguished candidates considered by our search committee because of her enthusiasm, inclusive approach to education and her history of excellent management skills,” said School of Medicine Dean Pamela B. Davis. “She is an outstanding addition to our leadership team and, based on her experience, will be flexible and adaptable in providing top-flight education in the time of COVID, even as circumstances change rapidly.”
Logio will join Case Western Reserve on July 1.
“I am so excited for this opportunity to lead the medical education efforts at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine,” Logio said. “I was immediately drawn to the culture of innovation with a priority for interprofessional education. I will be like a kid in a candy shop with the different learning laboratories of the multi-affiliate health systems, plus the extraordinarily talented team of educators doing superb work.”
Logio’s teaching honors include: the Sol Goldman Award in Geriatrics from Johns Hopkins; nominated twice for the Eugene A. Stead Teaching Award as well as the Golden Apple Teaching Award at Duke University; the Haskill Schiff Award for Excellence in Clinical Medicine and an Engel Society Faculty Inductee at Duke; and received an Outstanding Teacher Award in General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics from Indiana University. She was also awarded the Outstanding Clinician Educator from the Society of General Internal Medicine.
She has served as editor of Board Basics for the American College of Physicians and as a contributor to its Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program. She received an American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) Clinical Care Innovation Award in 2016, and led the Weill Cornell residency program to become the first graduate medical education (GME) program designated as an Apple Distinguished Education Program.
Board certified in internal medicine, Logio received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University and completed residency training in internal medicine at Duke University Medical Center, where she began her career as a staff physician and educator. She continued her academic career at the Indiana University School of Medicine and served as director of the Internal Medicine residency there as well as at the Weill Cornell Medical College before serving as chair at Drexel University College of Medicine.
In addition to serving as vice dean, Logio will become director of Case Western Reserve’s Center for Medical Education. In these roles, she will be responsible for not only physician training, but the School of Medicine’s highly regarded physician-assistant and Master of Science in Anesthesiology programs.
