The Kelvin Smith Library has received the single largest commitment in its history, a $5 million gift from a donor who wished to remain anonymous. The funds will be used to create an unrestricted endowment to support library services and the purchase of library materials.
A major transformation is under way at the library to achieve its vision to be the information laboratory for knowledge collection, connection, creation and curation. This gift will allow the library to improve its collaborative research and learning spaces, provide up-to-date print and electronic library collections and incorporate state-of-the-art technology.
In speaking about the gift, Arnold Hirshon, associate provost and university librarian, said that “attracting and maintaining expertise is essential to assist students and faculty in their use of new information resources and technologies. This generous endowment will significantly enhance the ability of the library to respond to constant changes in information delivery, including the purchase of significant print and electronic resources such as large sets of research materials, expansion of services to faculty and students, and continuous enhancement of facilities and technology to advance new collaborative and online styles of learning and research for digital scholarship.”
