Global Health Design in Uganda informational meeting

Students are invited to an informational meeting about Global Health Design in Uganda (ENGR 350U/ANTH 300), a project-based study abroad course in Uganda, Friday, Nov. 15, from 12:45 to 2 p.m. in Wickenden Building, Room 328.

During the meeting, students will have the opportunity to meet the faculty leaders and past participants.

About the course

The Case Western Reserve University Anthropology-Engineering Collaborative (AEC) offers this unique course applying social science and engineering skills and expertise to address global health issues in Uganda. The AEC is part of a longstanding collaboration between CWRU and Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. Students collaborate with students at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, and Global Health Design Collaborative, a CWRU student group, to design and implement solutions to specific health issues in Luwero, Uganda.

In Uganda, CWRU students and their Makerere University counterparts travel together to Luwero district where they visit health centers to collaborate with local staff to review current design prototypes and issues.

Activities include:

  • Talking to health center staff at different levels of the health care system;
  • Observing community health outreach; and
  • Meeting with diverse stakeholders in Luwero and Kampala.

Students gain hands-on experience in engineering design, social science methods, and working in transnational, interdisciplinary teams, and contribute directly to ongoing efforts to address global health issues in Uganda.

The class is open to all majors, but enrollment is by application and instructors’ consent. This course may be taken for either one or three credit hours. Students who enroll for three credits (graded) may count this as a general education requirement. For engineering students, it can count as a social science credit, and for arts and sciences students, it can count toward the global and cultural diversity requirement

Interested students should contact Janet McGrath at jwm6@ case.edu or Andrew Rollins at amr9@case.edu.

Pizza will be provided.
