“Pulling from the Headlines: Poetry Written After Media”

Members of the Case Western Reserve University community are invited to a roundtable poetry discussion hosted by the Department of English titled “Pulling from the Headlines: Poetry Written After Media.” This event will be held Tuesday, Nov. 5, from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. in the Guilford Hall parlor.

The discussion will feature visiting poets Marcelo Hernandez Castillo and Javier Zamora, Jim Sheeler, the Shirley Wormser Professor of Journalism and Media Writing, and Damaris Puñales-Alpízar, associate professor of Spanish.

Participants will examine how poems re-document, interrogate or re-mediate reported and historical facts, with a special focus on media coverage of immigration issues.

The discussion will feature two poems by the visiting poets: “if found, then measured” by Marcelo Hernandez Castillo (text available at poets.org) and “[Immigration Headline]” by Javier Zamora (text available poetryfoundation.org).

An audience Q&A will follow the discussion.
