Leading community organizations will convene an action summit in Cleveland to call out racism as a public health crisis Nov. 8–9 at Public Auditorium (500 Lakeside Ave. E.). Members of the Case Western Reserve University community are invited to the event, titled “400 Years of Inequity: A Call to Action.”
YWCA Greater Cleveland and First Year Cleveland are gathering a coalition to memorialize the legacy of slavery, connect that history to modern racial inequities, and equip attendees with the knowledge, motivation and tools to move local governments to take resolute actions against racism.
This national summit will feature skills-building and educational breakout sessions, performances and exhibits, and an opportunity to connect with people who share a commitment to equity and justice.
The summit will feature keynote presentations by renowned experts, including:
- Isabel Wilkerson, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of The Warmth of Other Suns;
- john a. powell, director of the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society at the University of California, Berkeley;
- Harriet Washington, award-winning medical writer and author of Medical Apartheid, the first social history of medical research with African-Americans;
- Darrick Hamilton, executive director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity;
- Stacey Stewart, president and CEO of March of Dimes; and
- Gail Christopher, award-winning social change agent and former senior advisor and vice president of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.
