The Department of Economics at the Weatherhead School of Management will host Hal Varian, chief economist at Google Inc. and professor emeritus at the University of California–Berkeley, for the 2019 Howard T. McMyler Lecture Tuesday, Sept. 24, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Tinkham Veale University Center, Ballrooms B and C.
Varian will present “Automation and Procreation,” explaining how demand is only part of the labor market and how the impact of automation on future wages and employment levels will rely on how the supply side of the labor market reacts to these changes. He also will address how expected demographic changes will play a key role in wage growth in the next 30 years.
A reception will follow his lecture.

About the speaker
A renowned micro economist who has worked at Google since 2007, Varian is author of two key textbooks in the field. He earned his PhD from the University of California–Berkeley in 1973 and went on to hold positions at MIT and the University of Michigan. He returned to the University of California–Berkeley in 1995.’’
His papers cover such topics as economic theory, industrial organization, financial economics, market design, econometrics and information economics.
