5 things to do during Family Fun Month—and beyond—around Cleveland

From planned family vacations to weekly game nights or dinners, time spent with family not only strengthens family bonds—it also helps us create lasting memories to cherish for years to come. Sometimes, however, it can be easy to get caught up in work, school and other obligations, leading us to be too busy or tired to plan adventures with loved ones.

Each August, Family Fun Month serves as a reminder for individuals to take a break and enjoy the company of family members before becoming consumed with everyday responsibilities—both during the summer and throughout the year.

Before the new academic year begins at Case Western Reserve University, The Daily compiled 5 family-friendly activities that can help you and yours make memories.

1. Visit one of Cleveland’s parks.

Spend quality time with your family as you connect with nature when you visit Edgewater Park, Rockefeller Park, Cleveland Metroparks or any of the other parks throughout the city. From spacious picnic areas and playgrounds to hiking trails, fisheries and other offerings, Cleveland’s parks have plenty of open space that encourage physical activities and endless learning opportunities.

2. Explore exhibits at Cleveland Museum of Art.

With a family friendly atmosphere, Cleveland locals can take advantage of free general admission to the Cleveland Museum of Art, which houses over 60,000 works of art by Monet, Picasso and other featured artists from around the world. Sensory-friendly Saturdays are also available each third Saturday of the month until Dec. 21 for guests who’d prefer a calming museum experience with reduced crowds, noise and distractions.

3. Interact with STEM concepts at Great Lakes Science Center.

Home to the NASA Glenn Visitor Center where individuals can engage with exhibits related to space missions, the Great Lakes Science Center features numerous interactive displays that make learning about science, technology, engineering and mathematics fun and accessible for guests of all ages. This center also regularly hosts live science demonstrations where visitors can see scientific principles in action.

4. Cool off at Kalahari Resorts in Sandusky.

As the Midwest’s largest indoor waterpark, Kalahari Resorts features numerous family-friendly activities, including miniature golf, arcade games, escape rooms and more. And, if you’re looking to unwind and relax, the resort also offers a spa which boasts a range of massage, facial and body treatments.

5. Jam out at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Trace the history and evolution of rock and roll, as well as its global influence, at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Whether you wish to learn more about the legends of rock, discover the latest Hall of Fame inductees, or make your own music, the museum offers six levels of educational and immersive exhibits, making it  a perfect indoor activity for all seasons.
