3 things to do in Cleveland in April

The 2024–25 academic year at Case Western Reserve University is in the final stretch and students, faculty and staff are busy preparing for the flurry of end-of-semester activities. Over the next month, there will be no shortage of activities on campus from this year’s spring comedian to the Hudson Relays.

But for those who want to get off campus and explore the city as the weather warms, we’ve pulled together a few options on what to do in Cleveland in April.

Cleveland Guardians Home Opener

April 8

Baseball season is officially underway, and our hometown Cleveland Guardians are off to a solid start. After three away series to open the season, the Guardians will have their home opener game Tuesday, April 8, at Progressive Field.

Tickets to the game are sold out, but there are plenty of other ways to get in on the action. Several local eateries will host watch parties. Or, you can mark the day by delving into baseball history at the Baseball Heritage Museum.

The museum, which preserves the history of League Park and shares stories from Carribean, Latin, Negro, Women’s, Industrial and Barnstormer leagues, will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Docent-led tours will be offered every hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with self-guided tours available at all times. The first 100 guests will receive a free hot dog (weather permitting), while the first 30 will be given a special gift.

Admission is $10, but free for children ages 9 and under, military members (with ID) and museum members.

Doan Brook Stream Sweep

April 19

Help make our community cleaner and healthier in honor of Earth Day. Members of the CWRU community are invited to join the Doan Brook Watershed Partnership and the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes for the annual stream sweep Saturday, April 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Participants will collect litter, trash and other debris from the stream before it reaches Lake Erie. The sweep will begin at Rockefeller Lagoon and move through the Cleveland Cultural Garden.

Those who join the efforts should consider the weather when deciding what to wear and should wear closed-toe shoes.

Dyngus Day Cleveland

April 21

Each year on the Monday after Easter, Clevelanders embrace a Polish tradition: Dyngus Day.

The festivities, which mark the end of Lent and the joy of Easter, celebrate Polish American culture. In Cleveland, it offers a chance to recognize the strong fabric of Eastern European cultures in our region.

This year’s event—held April 21 in the Gordon Square Arts District—will feature Polka music and dancing, a pierogi float, a pierogi-eating contest, Miss Dyngus Day selection (largely at random), marching accordionists, food and more.

Tickets cost $14 for ages 13 and older.
