Trustee, alumna to receive lifetime achievement award

Susie Gharib, a 1972 graduate of Case Western Reserve who went on to a highly distinguished career as a business journalist, will receive the New York Financial Writers’ Elliott V. Bell Award in honor of her exemplary contributions to the field as a print reporter and broadcast anchor.

Now the co-anchor and executive vice president for strategy of the PBS Nightly Business Report, Gharib is one of the primary reasons the series has become television’s most watched evening business news program. A 14-year veteran of Nightly Business Report, Gharib is recognized widely for her smart and probing interviews with some of the world’s most prominent business leaders and officials. The roster of individuals she has queried includes U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush as well as Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan. In addition, she has interviewed Microsoft’s Bill Gates, Berkshire Hathaway’s Warren Buffet, J.P. Morgan’s Jamie Dimon and General Electric’s Jeff Immelt.

While at Case Western Reserve, Gharib earned a bachelor’s degree in English, magna cum laude honors and membership in Phi Beta Kappa. She also earned a master’s degree in international affairs at Columbia University. During her career she has won the Gracie Allen Award as the top anchorwoman of a national news program, two Front Page Awards from the Newswoman’s Club of New York, and a Fulbright Award for furthering global business understanding.

Gharib will receive the award at the end of this month at the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism. The award is named for the first president of the National Financial Writers Association, an acclaimed business reporter for the New York Times who went on to become the editor and publisher of Business Week magazine. Previous recipients include The New York Times’ James B. Stewart and Gretchen Morgenstern, Fortune’s Alan Sloan, and Byron Calame of The Wall Street Journal.
