WebMD: New research finds that mothers of very low-birth-weight babies often have long-term medical problems. Lynn Singer, deputy provost and VP for academic affairs and professor of environmental health sciences and pediatrics, has long studied the effect of stress on mothers of preemies and found that having a good social support network is crucial. “We have just begun to understand the importance of offering support services that help [lessen] parental stress during this time,” she said.
