Social Justice Institute October Research Lunch

The Social Justice Institute (SJI) will host its October Research Lunch, featuring SJI Fellows Matthew Rossman and Elizabeth Nalepa, Tuesday, Oct. 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in Crawford Hall, Room A13.

Matthew Rossman

Rossman, a professor of law, will present “Not the Sharpest Tools in the Shed – In Search of Smarter Homeowner Subsidies.” His research reveals the profound disconnect between the federal tax code’s homeowner subsidies—often criticized for primarily benefiting higher income households—and other federal housing-related policies. These other policies include combating disinvestment in distressed housing submarkets, decreasing residential segregation and minimizing negative environmental externalities. The project also explores how homeowner subsidies might be made smarter, including through community level applications of advances in real estate data and analytics.

Elizabeth Nalepa

Sociology graduate student Nalepa will present “The Effect of Abortion Restrictions on Individual Outcomes.”

New regulations and restrictions placed on access to abortion in the United States are assumed to disproportionately impact women marginalized by their race, ethnicity and socioeconomic status. Using data that spans more than 30 years, Nalepa will explore how health policies like abortion regulation generate or worsen health inequalities.

The Social Justice Research Lunch Series is a monthly set of events where faculty and researchers across academic disciplines present how social justice is central to their research. Question and answer sessions to follow presentations.

Bring your lunch. Drinks and desserts will be provided.
