Chair at table

Richard N. Campen Lecture in Architecture and Sculpture: “Now I Sit Me Down”

Have you ever wondered where the rocking chair came from, or why cheap plastic chairs are everywhere? The way we choose to sit and what we choose to sit on speak volumes about our values, our tastes and the things we hold dear.

Architect and writer Witold Rybczynski will chronicle the history of the chair from ancient Egypt to the present-day for the Richard N. Campen Lecture in Architecture and Sculpture. In his lecture, titled, “Now I Sit Me Down,” he will show how design, construction, social mores and aesthetics come together in this ordinary, everyday object.

This lecture will be held Thursday, Nov. 10, from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Thwing Center ballroom.

A pre-lecture reception will begin at 4:30 p.m. A book sale and signing will immediately follow lecture.

Registration is available online.
