Ninth annual Case for Community Day to be held Sept. 16

This year’s Case for Community Day will take place Friday, Sept. 16, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The annual event—in its ninth year—is a campuswide day of service to the Cleveland area. Projects include teaching senior citizens the basics of new technology, reading to elementary students, painting houses, landscaping and more.

More than 450 volunteers are needed to fill volunteer positions for 67 projects. Individuals who participate will receive two tickets to a Cleveland Indians game.

Many of the opportunities are projects familiar to those who have helped out with Case for Community Day in the past, such as cleaning up the Cleveland Cultural Gardens on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. or adapting toys for children with disabilities for RePlay for Kids. But there will be plenty of new opportunities this year as well, including painting rooms at Orca House, assisting with craft making at Keller Art Glass and helping with landscaping at Hitchcock Center for Women.

“We appreciate receiving volunteers from Case Western Reserve University each year for Case for Community Day,” said Vickie E. Johnson, executive director of the Fairfax Renaissance Development Corp. “Each year, we receive many volunteers to help us with neighborhood revitalization by painting and landscaping model block homes in the Fairfax community. Their efforts are instrumental to the beautification of our community.”

The day kicks off at Thwing Center with registration and lunch at 11 a.m., followed by a short program. Volunteers will depart—either by bus or on foot—at 11:45 a.m. for their assignments, volunteer from noon to 4 p.m. and return to campus by 5 p.m.

Registration for Case for Community Day will open Aug. 22. Stay tuned to The Daily for more information.
